The platinum print has an indescribable charm, suggesting atmosphere, though the negative printed on another medium may be entirely devoid of this valuable pictorial quality.
-- Alfred Stieglitz
I work with artists in the collaborative style of a traditional hand pulled artisan press. My thirty-five years of experience has proven to me that working closely with the artist in this fashion produces the most rewarding results. Successful platinum & palladium prints require communication and planning between artist and printer. Even with the technological advances available today producing a successful platinum & palladium print is an art not a science.
I begin all projects, individual prints or complete portfolios, with a conversation about what you want to accomplish and how I might facilitate that end. I provide an extensive portfolio to demonstrate what is possible in terms of color, tonality, retouch work, etc. I am also always open to pursuing avenues I haven't discovered. I like to see as much of your work as possible so I can understand your direction and goals as an artist.
From our meeting and the review of work I develop the specifications of the project. These include your preferred tonality and color, retouching and tonal masking requirements, image and paper size, embossing, signage and designation, and finally what documentation (providing an indication of authenticity or provenance) might be required.
I can work from b/w negatives, color negatives, color transparencies, b/w or color prints, drawings or other art. A reference print is appreciated if only as a departure point. Platinum & palladium prints always have their own character and I use this reference print only to get a further idea of direction or in some case, what not to do.
At this point I create a confirmation proof. This is usually a PDF file that shows general content, size of image, and position on sheet.
Upon approval of the confirmation proof I produce a small, 4x5 platinum/palladium trial proof. This is for content, tonality, color, etc. This is an "image only" proof. Paper size is not considered.
Upon approval of the trial proof a "bon a tire" is produced. This will be a full size image on full size paper. Upon approval this print becomes the reference print to which all prints of the edition will be compared.
I then produce the edition.
Upon completion of the edition, I curate the prints. This is an inspection and spotting process.
The edition is then presented for signing, titling, and numbering. Documentation is prepared listing all the prints, all states, and information relating to the specific edition.
